GRAND JUNCTION, Colo - On Tuesday, Vietnam War veterans, VA hospital staff, supporters, and many others gathered to pay tribute to the Vietnam veterans.
It's been 64 years since the two-decade-long war started, and the last time we'd enlist soldiers through the draft.
"As a dog handler our dogs were left behind, that's always weighed heavy", says Rob Baughman who was a U.S. Army Dog Handler during the Vietnam War.
It was a contentious war during a contentious period in American history, but this symbolic gesture of planting a tree in honor of the sacrifices made during that war is welcomed by the veterans who attended.
"This is very symbolic, it's a nice 'thank you' to all the veterans that served during the Vietnam era", says Gary Parrott the Commander of the Grand Valley Combined Honor and is also a Vietnam veteran.
"It's the 'welcome home' that we never got", says Baughman.
For many of them, the memories of that war still ring through their minds to this day.
"I remember going through basic training in 1973 and the statement was that, 'We'd all be flying the friendly skies of Vietnam.' Many of my fellow classmates went over there and never returned, so this tree is a symbol of their sacrifice and service", says Parrott.
As many in the military have said, "There is no honor without sacrifice."
"Honor those that have offered their bodies up, themselves up to serve this country and protect this nation from all enemies foreign and domestic", says Parrott.
